How fines content affects granular plasticity of under-filled binary mixtures

چکیده
In recent years, binary mixtures have been the subject of numerous experimental and numerical studies. However, few attempts made on investigating effect fines content (fc) non-associated plasticity mixtures, which is significant for constitutive modelling such material. Thanks to 2D DEM simulations, this study aims provide an understanding how fc affects character flow rule resulting material instability in mixtures. For under-filled materials (where coarse grains constitute most load-bearing skeleton), fine help stabilize granular assembly (1) by limiting macroscopic plastic deformations, results strain hardening, (2) reducing contractive microstructure reorganizations, reduces gap between associated directions. Fines influences direction but has no influence normal yield surface. Eventually, perspectives mesoscale mechanisms are given highlight role geometrical mechanical properties materials.

Binary Mixtures of Two-Dimensional Granular Piles
Previous work on the maximum angle of stability of granular material piles had shown a dip pattern, with lower angles of stability for mixtures of hexagons and dimers or singles made out of ball bearings. This purpose of this study was to confirm this pattern for mixtures of different shapes, namely doubles and large diamonds and small and large triangles. This was done by recording footage of ...
متن کاملReversible axial segregation of binary mixtures of granular materials.
Measurements of axial segregation of binary mixtures of glass beads having different diameters in a rotating horizontal cylinder are reported. For rotation speeds of ~ 15 rpm a mixed state quickly (within a few minutes) segregates into sharp bands of alternating large and small glass beads along the axis of rotation. Decreasing the rotation speed to ~ 5 rpm causes the bands to disappear, restor...
متن کاملThe Mechanical Coupling of Fluid-Filled Granular Material Under Shear
The coupled mechanics of fluid-filled granular media controls the physics of many Earth systems such as saturated soils, fault gouge, and landslide shear zones. It is well established that when the pore fluid pressure rises, the shear resistance of fluid-filled granular systems decreases, and as a result catastrophic events such as soil liquefaction, earthquakes, and accelerating landslides may...
متن کاملKinetic Theory for Binary Granular Mixtures at Low-Density
Many features of granular media can be modelled as a fluid of hard spheres with inelastic collisions. Under rapid flow conditions, the macroscopic behavior of grains can be described through hydrodynamic equations. At lowdensity, a fundamental basis for the derivation of the hydrodynamic equations and explicit expressions for the transport coefficients appearing in them is provided by the Boltz...
متن کاملHeating mechanism affects equipartition in a binary granular system.
Two species of particles in a binary granular system typically do not have the same mean kinetic energy, in contrast to the equipartition of energy required in equilibrium. We investigate the role of the heating mechanism in determining the extent of nonequipartition of kinetic energy. In most experiments, different species are unequally heated at the boundaries. We show by event-driven simulat...
